It’s actually really useful to introduce the conditional perfect tense in German fairly closely with the future perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, other than the auxiliary tense, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practice both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together. PRIMARY FRENCH KS2 FRENCH NUMBERS 0-21 WORD WALL It’s easy to create an instant introduction to French Numbers 0-21 with this set of word wall cards, featuring beginning numbers that I like to share with my young learners of French. They’re really useful during the introduction phase, and we also use them for developing language skills and awareness in general. We like to do number guessing and calculation games at regular intervals too. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format - the words are definitely big enough for children to be able to read - we do lots of guessing and mental math games, using these as a visual prompt. PRIMARY FRENCH KS3 CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCH FREEBIE Mots Cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie word search features fourteen French Christmas words, which helps to develop students’ awareness of some Francohphone Christmas traditions and figures, such as Saint Nicholas and Père Fouettard. I use this as a prompt to stimulate discussion about French Christmas practices and customs, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too. PRIMARY SPANISH KS2 SPANISH KS3 SPANISH SPANISH COLOURS FLASHCARDS POSTERS Los colores en español 8 posters / flashcards These 4***adjectival agreement*** posters, with a focus on the colour verde, make an ideal grammar and speaking prompt in the Spanish classroom - for example, I encourage students to look carefully at the differences between el monstruo verde and los monstruos verdes. Giving learners the opportunity to look very closely at language, to identify similarities and differences with their first language, as well as rules and patterns in the target language, is a really key language teaching and learning strategy. I use high-frequency beginner Spanish vocabulary to do this. As students build their vocabulary, with increasing understanding of gender and gender agreement, they are able to apply those rules and patterns to new language. I use questions such as Verdadero o falso? El monstruo verdes? , really emphasizing pronunciation, so that they can hear the difference in agreement. I often write the questions on the whiteboard too, as it’s equally important that they are able to***recognise the differences in the written words*** too, and to link sound with spelling . Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. It doesn’t matter if this particular language doesn’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the flashcards / posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in Spanish, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in Spanish. They are perfect for developing English language and literacy skills, really getting the most from classroom display. They introduce learners to a range of fruits in English from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of English words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. There are 25 fruits in either the singular or plural form using the definite article. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from, other languages learners may already know, or are learning, helps them become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts. This is really useful for both current and later learning. It doesn’t matter if some of the fruits don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in English. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts. Along the way, learners can suggest other fruits to add to the display, and may even choose to try some fruits they haven’t tasted before. ESL EFL ENGLISH FRUITS ACTIVITIES a lively & communicative whole-group language learning game, perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing a range of fruits in English. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. I point out particular phonemes and sounds, such as the soft g in orange compared to the hard g in grapefruit, and the addition of n to a when preceding a noun starting with a vowel, such as an apple for example. PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN BEGINNER GERMAN BREAKFAST WORD WALL Deutsch für Kinder Das Frühstück Word Wall 18 scrumptious breakfast items. Displaying key vocabulary in the German classroom is a really simple and successful way of creating a German ambiance, showing***language in its real-world use***, and keeping language fresh in students’ minds, particularly in the introductory phase of that particular vocabulary set. There are 18 breakfast items in this word wall, though I may not actually have all the items in my learning plan. I tend to include additional language to help students develop language skills and awareness in general. There is implicit grammatical input, with a focus on the definite article in German, a range of masculine, feminine and neuter, singular and plural. We look at cognates and near-cognates, and talk about similarities and differences between the words in German and English. We discuss breakfast in general, what we like to eat, or we’d like to try. In this way, the word wall becomes a real learning tool, and not simply attractive classroom decor. The breakfast items are: bacon : yoghurt : cup of coffee : cereal : jam : pancakes : croissant : waffles porridge : orange juice : milk : boiled egg & boiled eggs (useful for looking at singular/plural differences) : fried egg : toast : bread rolls : syrup : tea There are two headers: Guten Appetit! and Das Frühstück. Students enjoy creating their own headers too, as well as adding to the number of breakfast items as they develop their German vocabulary. PRIMARY KS3 SPANISH NUMBERS 0-31 Los números cero - veinte: diez sopas de letras! I like to create word searches for my young beginner learners of Spanish - they really are a great way of providing students with opportunities not only to embed their vocab, but also to engage with the written word and spelling in Spanish. They are really easy to differentiate, ensuring that students have a series of progressive challenges. I use word searches regularly, and have a stock of them ready in folders - they’re ready to go for starters, refreshers, plenaries, fun-time fillers or activities for cover lessons, at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m introducing numbers in Spanish. Great for high school beginner Spanish too! In this set, there are five Spanish to Spanish grids, with the Spanish words as prompts. Students then find them in Spanish in the grid. A great way of really consolidating vocab is to get students to complete the word list on the grid sheet too. There are also five English to Spanish grids. With these, the prompt words are in English, so students have to know the correct Spanish word in order to find it in the grid. There’s a word list to complete on these too. As the challenge increases, the words appear in an increasing number of different directions, and students can identify which directions they’re looking for by referring to the arrow key on each grid. I always give my students answer keys for this kind of activity - they help students develop more independence in their learning, give them an additional chance to engage with the language, and they really enjoy correcting their own and each others’ work! The word searches are in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading from left to right in English, and in my experience, this is really useful for young beginner Spanish learners, as they begin to familiarize themselves with the written word in Spanish. PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN BEGINNER GERMAN TELLING THE TIME ANALOGUE O’CLOCK LIST WITH MATCHING CLOCK FACES I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my young beginner learners of German, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to***link it in their memory with a visual image***, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. Children glue the lists into their German vocabulary books, or file them in their German vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful German vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning. For young and / or beginner German learners, I focus initially on a single time set, and this list shows o’clock on a single page. This is because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to German prefer this. PRIMARY FRENCH KS3 FRENCH YEAR 7 FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORDS & PICTURES A great French Christmas picture & vocabulary reference resource for younger learners of French. It works well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. There are 20 common French Christmas words with pictures that I’ve found ideal for children learning French. I’ve used a blend of masculine and feminine nouns, definite article and indefinite article and there are some plurals too. I use this to stimulate discussion about articles, the concept of gender in French (which is often quite contrary to some learners’ first language, such as English), and forming the plural in French. It’s also great for promoting discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in France and French regions, as well as other French-speaking countries, comparing them to other Christmas customs with which students are familiar. Over time, I encourage students to add to the list - by the end of their French learning programme, they’ll have a comprehensive French Christmas vocabulary bank.
